Saving Mothers is collecting baby supplies from new mothers at Mt. Sinai Medical Center and others. Working with the AFYA Foundation, we are packaging these supplies with birth kits to distribute to mothers and birth attendants in Africa.
WHY PITCH IN? WHAT WE'RE DOING
Saving Mothers and the AFYA Foundation wish all mothers safe and happy deliveries. Unfortunately, many new mothers around the world can't expect the same joyful outcome. Many home births under the supervision of untrained birth attendants result in death or injury for mothers and their newborns.

Now, these two organizations are working together to make safe, successful births the norm for expectant mothers in Africa. To do this, we are creating, shipping and delivering "clean birth kits" to women abroad. Studies have shown that these kits slash rates of fatal infection for both mothers and their children.

Supplies are being collected on the Maternity Floor at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. If you can't make it to New York, the most important thing you can do for mothers overseas is make a monetary donation -- 100% of which will go toward growing Saving Mothers programs serving mothers in the field. Saving Mothers and AFYA ask new mothers who have more resources than they need, and others to donate supplies for clean birth kits that have the chance to make births safer and more sanitary. We are collecting supplies on the Maternity Floor of Mt. Sinai Hospital. Specific items we are looking for include:
  • • Baby blankets
  • • Sanitary pads
  • • Newborn diapers
  • • Soap
  • • Beanie hats
  • • Underpads
These items, along with pictorial instructions for attendants, will be assembled and shipped by AFYA to well-established, on-the-ground programs administered by Saving Mothers. Saving Mothers volunteers will help distribute these kits and ensure that those receiving them know how to use them effectively during deliveries.
