Taraneh Shirazian, MD
President & Medical Director
Dr. Shirazian is a board certified faculty gynecologist and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center, where she also serves as the Director of Global Women's Health. Her specialty is minimally invasive gynecologic surgery. Dr. Shirazian received her MD through the accelerated program at Brown Medical School, and completed her post-graduate residency at Mount Sinai.
Charles Ascher-Walsh, MD
Dr. Walsh is the Director of Urogynecology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and is a practicing surgeon there. He has extensive experience in Female Reproductive and Reconstructive Medicine, and frequently accompanies our team to perform pro bono surgery in underserved communities.
Nerys Benfield, MD, MPH
Dr. Benfield is the Director of Family Planning in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Montefiore Medical Center in New York. She completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Fellowship in Family Planning at the University of California, San Francisco, and received her MPH from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Benfield is an experienced teacher and clinician with focused expertise in contraception and abortion, and has lectured at numerous regional and national conferences. Her research focuses on increasing contraceptive knowledge and access for high-risk women such as those with chronic medical conditions, women with genital fistula, and women in conflict situations. Dr. Benfield has also done extensive global work in her field, having trained OB/Gyns in Rwanda as part of the Human Resources for Health Program, and has worked with local collaborators in the Democratic Republic of Congo since 2008 to improve family planning systems, clinical and research training, and health technologies including IT and ultrasound for low-resource settings. This year Dr. Benfield with be working with Saving Mothers in rural Kenya to expand their curriculum of care to include free IUD placement for women post-delivery.
Michael Girshin, MD
Dr. Girshin is the Chief of Anesthesiology at the Metropolitan Medical Center in New York City. He graduated from the Russian State Medical University, and served as a Clinical Fellow in Pediatric Anesthesiology at the New England Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Girshin oversees the administration of anesthesia during our pro bono surgery trips and also trains providers on the ground for us in underserved communities.
Nils Hennig, MD, MPH, PhD
Dr. Henning is the Director of the MPH Program at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Assistant Director of The Mount Sinai Global Health Center. He is an expert in infectious disease and has done extensive humanitarian work in underserved and war-torn regions around the world with Medicine Sans Frontieres. Dr. Henning has been an invaluable advisor to the Saving Mothers team as we navigate the challenges of expanding our services to additional developing countries.
Andrei Rebarber, MD
Dr. Rebarber is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist in private practice and an Associate Clinical Professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He received his MD from the State University of New York at Syracuse and did his post-graduate training at both the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York and the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Rebarber is an accomplished researcher and has been a frequent contributor to the development of Saving Mothers' research protocols.
Noel Strong, MD
Dr. Strong is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist who practices at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City and is an Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine there. She received her MD from the University of Illinois and did her post-graduate training at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Strong frequently accompanies us on pro bono surgery interventions and also trains local providers for us in low-resource communities.
