March 8th was International Women’s Day! This year, the UN theme for Women’s Day was “Equality for Women is Progress for All.”
Participants of the surgical trip to the Dominican Republic tabling at Mount Sinai during International Women’s Day
To raise awareness of International Women’s Day and the upcoming Saving Mothers’ surgical trip to the Dominican Republic, a group of medical students from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai held a tabling event at the Mount Sinai hospital. As participants of this year’s trip to the Dominican Republic, we were eager to get the word out and raise more funds. We played some bachata, merengue, and attracted many passersby ranging from doctors, to medical students, to patients’ family members. During the tabling event, we talked to people about the need for better women’s access to healthcare, our upcoming trip, and held a $100 raffle for donations. Overall, our awareness campaign raised over $500 to help women in the Dominican Republic.
Speaking to so many people about our trip only made us more excited to begin our work in the Dominican Republic next week!
