Book Club

Whether or not you are already a member of a book club, this is a great way to start a conversation about global maternal health issues and raise money for Saving Mothers at the same time. Read a topical book with a group of friends, and host a discussion event at your home. Consider charging an entry fee for participants which in turn can be donated to Saving Mothers. Recommended book titles include:

Cutting for Stone, Abraham Verghese

This enthralling family saga follows the story of twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nurse and a brash British doctor in Ethiopia. Orphaned by their mother's death in childbirth and their father's disappearance, the brothers are bound by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine.

Mom & Me & Mom, Maya Angelou

While the story of Maya Angelou's extraordinary life has been chronicled in her numerous best-selling autobiographies, this book delves into the deepest personal story of her life: her relationship with her mother. Mom & Me & Mom explores the healing and love that evolved between the two women over the course of their lives, and the love that fostered Maya Angelou's rise from immeasurable depths to impossible heights.

Mountains Beyond Mountains, Tracy Kidder: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World

This book chronicles the true tale of Dr. Paul Farmer. Doctor, Harvard Professor, renowned infectious-disease specialist, MacArthur Genius Award-winner, anthropologist, and real-life Robin Hood, Farmer was brought up in a bus and on a boat. In medical school, he found his life's calling: to diagnose and cure infectious disease, and to bring the lifesaving tools of modern medicine to people in developing countries. This radical book shows how change can be fostered in situations that seem insurmountable, and demonstrates how Farmer - who makes house calls in both Boston and the mountains of Haiti - blasts through convention to get results.
