| WHO WE ARE | WHAT WE'RE DOING | |
|
UC Berkeley is home to the Saving Mothers Research Team (SMRT). Supported by the Associated Students of the University of California, we are dedicated to raising awareness of international maternal health issues.
According to the United Nations Population Fund, a mother dies in childbirth every minute. For every life lost, 20 more women experience complications ranging from chronic infections to disabling injuries, like obstetric fistulas. Berkeley's Saving Mother Chapter hosts film screenings, funds sustainable projects, hosts fundraisers and distributes information about this crucial issue. We work with students on campus and local residents to promote awareness and provide support services for low-income women and children. |
Berkeley's Saving Mothers chapter works with local health organizations to gather maternal health information and forge connections with community leaders and advisors. Annual initiatives like Mother's Day card sales, supply drives, film screenings and other events raise awareness and funds for Saving Mothers projects. We host professor luncheons to facilitate public maternal health discussions and connect students with leading global health figures on campus. Our supply drives gather boxes of baby and maternity clothes, bottles, blankets, toys, books and more for homeless women and children living in the Bay Area. This year, we're also putting together a cookbook tailored to women looking to make healthy, nutritious meals for their kids on small budgets. We will also be filming cooking demonstrations and posting online recipes to accompany distribution of the book.
